MIDDLESEX COUNTY UTILITIES AUTHORITY
SEWER LINE BREAK UPDATE: March 6, 2003
12 Noon
Contact: Richard Fitamant or Tony Cicatiello

- As of 11 am, total amount of bypass sewage at the Sayreville
Pumping Station was estimated at 309 million gallons
- The average hourly bypass sewage rate varies from 3
to 4 million gals/hour
- MCUA expects results from its river sampling sometime
this afternoon and will forward it to DEP; sampling on
the river and at the pump station will continue today
– as results become available, MCUA will forward
them to DEP
- At the site, the excavation and pipe continues to be
dewatered; as of 11 am, the 102” pipe was dewatered
to its midpoint
- The pipe is exposed, the crack is visible on one section
of pipe; for now, we are not sure of the extent of the
damage to other pipe sections
- The contractor is placing steel sheeting around the
pipe to shore up the soft ground; the steel sheeting allows
the contractor to excavate more soil around the pipe and
to increase dewatering efficiencies
- Once the sheeting is in place, sometime this afternoon,
the excavation and dewatering will continue which will
allow the inspection of the pipe
- Optimistically, MCUA will be meeting with the contractor
this afternoon to determine a timeline this afternoon
- Weather is still a problem, both for construction and
bypass at the pumping station
