- As of 1 pm, total amount of bypass sewage at the Sayreville
Pumping Station was estimated at 440 million gallons
- The average hourly bypass sewage rate over the past
9 hours has varied from 0.3 to 1.7 million gals/hr; weather
was helpful today in that the volume of sewage and run-off
from precipitation was lower than it has been over the
past week and allowed us to reduce the amount of sewage
bypassing the system
- At the break site, the damaged pipe has been removed
and the inspection process has begun; excessive dewatering
continues to impact the rate of work progress; from the
external inspection of the pipe, it appears that the damage
to the pipeline was restricted to one pipe section; if
this is the case, it will take approximately 48 to 72
hours to fix the damaged pipe and expected completion
will be either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week
- Once the pipe is repaired, the pump system will be
turned on at a slow rate to ensure that the system gradually
adjusts to the pressure; presently, the MCUA plans to
utilize both the 72” pipeline and the repaired 102”
pipeline so that the sewage volume is contained and only
treated sewage from the wastewater treatment plant is
discharged to the Raritan River/Bay
- Sampling at the Sayreville pump station is continuing
through the weekend; the Raritan River sampling was suspended
for the weekend but will continue on Monday; all data
will be forwarded to DEP
- Work is continuing on a 24-hour basis
