The MCUA’s wastewater treatment facilities sustained significant damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Federal and state agencies—including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—all toured the sites following Hurricane Sandy and were briefed on operations.

The MCUA, with support from the Middlesex County Board of Freeholders, has since worked with the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust and the State and leveraged a grant from FEMA to conduct necessary repairs at the Sayreville and Edison Pump Stations. New flood walls and related infrastructure improvements – including the replacement of compromised equipment – at each station will protect against a 1-in-500-year flood event.

The updates below detail the immediate response to Hurricane Sandy and the MCUA’s response and restoration efforts.
